Editing Tips from professional Editor Judy Serrano

Easy Editing Tips by Judy Serrano

I teach developmental writing in a local college, and I do editing for indie authors in my spare time. There are some common errors that many people make, so I thought I might go over a few editing tips to help make editing easier.

1) Quotation marks and dialogue- When using dialogue, the punctuation almost always goes inside. There are a few exceptions but they are rare, so just assume they go inside.  I have covered the exceptions further down.

Examples:

“Lilly, you always go back to Max.”

“Hector, how could you do that to me?” he asked.

2) When not using dialogue, there are a few reasons why the punctuation should be outside the quotation marks.

Examples:

Is there any truth in the saying, “Blood is thicker than water”?

3) Also, always put the colon or the semi-colon outside the quotation marks.

My book club read “Easter’s Lilly”; now we are reading book two of the series.

3) Capitalization in dialogue- Another common mistake is forgetting what to capitalize in dialogue. You always capitalize the first letter in the beginning of the quotation marks.

Examples:

She said, “She will always love you, Max.”

The –S in she needs to be capitalized.

“Hector, how could you do that to me?” he asked.

The –h in he should not be capitalized.

4) Commas- Commas are probably the biggest editing challenge. If you have a dependent clause before an independent clause, you must put a comma between them. But when you have the independent clause first, there is no comma.

Examples:

Because he was involved with organized crime, his life was very dangerous.

His life was very dangerous because he was involved with organized crime.

5) Another editing trick is to always use commas when forming a list. When a comma is used in a list of 3 or more things, and is used before the conjunction, it is called an Oxford Comma. While not used as much in the UK, it is almost always used by Americans to avoid confusion. Although it is not considered "a rule," it is taught in American schools as the correct way to punctuate a sentence. So, to play it safe, add the Oxford.

Examples:

I need, eggs, milk, and cheese from the store.

Ellen is organizing the party, calling all the guests, and arranging for the clean up.

I hope these tips will help you with some of your day-to-day editing issues. If you need any further help, please contact me at AuthorJudySerrano@gmail.com.  I am running a holiday special for my editing services. Also go to www.JudySerrano.com if you’d like to check out some of my books.

Sneak Peak New Release Bedroom Games Charity Parkerson Interview

Author Interview Charity Parkerson
1. What was the driving force behind your current novel? For once, it was a purely erotic reason. Bedroom Games is the introduction to a new trilogy with Ellora’s Cave Publishing called the “Seven Levels” series. The main character, Pamela, is a highly sexual woman and she thrives on dangerous situations. Since I co-authored this one with horror author, Regina Puckett, and this is a horror erotica, I was in charge of the erotic while she was in charge of the horror.

 2. What personality traits do you most admire in other authors? Bravery. It takes a lot of courage to expose a piece of your soul to the world then watch silently as the world judges you loudly.

3. If you could offer a word of advice to an aspiring author who wants to venture down the road of self-publishing what would you tell them? Get an editor. Seriously. Don’t cheat yourself or your readers. Hire a professional. You cannot skimp on this. Indies are judged more harshly than Trad-pubbed authors. For that reason, when you put your work out there, you are representing us all.

4. Do you find inspiration in the works of other authors? If so, who and why… I’m inspired when I see someone succeed. Otherwise, if I’m working on a story, I try not to read anything, because I think it leaks into your subconscious.

 5. How would you describe the method behind your writing? I use the fly by the seat of my pants method. I’ve tried outlining, and I usually do know where my books are heading, but my characters tend to take on a life of their own and they stop listening to me.

 6. Are you an aficionado of any of the great classic authors? Which one do you feel has left their mark in the world of writing and changed the world the most? I’m not. I do love Edgar Allen Poe and William Shakespeare, but I’m not a huge classics fan. When I read anything about those authors, I’m thankful that writing has become an acceptable form of madness.

7. Is there any special preparations who take when you are about to sit down and write? I write full-time so I keep to a harsh writing schedule. Otherwise, I’ll end up on social media all day. If nothing else, the internet goes off.

 8. Which book you have written is your favorite and why? Is there a single character that stands out from the others? It’s hard to choose between my babies. “A Secure Heart” is probably my favorite, but “Paul” has a great deal of my life experiences in it, so it’s also very close to my heart. Lena Simmons from “The Assassin” is one of my favorite characters, and is the one everyone always asks about. My all-time favorite character has not released yet. He will be out next year in a new fight club series I’m working on for Ellora’s Cave. His name is Knox, and he is beautifully broken.

 9. Is there anything else you would like to share with your readers? Thank you all for supporting me, and continuing to read my books. I cannot say thank you enough to cover how much it means for me to be able to do what I love.

Born with no filter from her brain to her mouth, she decided to take this odd quirk and insert it in her characters. *2013 Readers' Favorite Award winner *ARRA Finalist for Favorite Paranormal Romance *Five-time winner of The Mistress of the Darkpath *Named one of the top 10 best books by an Indie author in 2011- Paranormal Reads Reviews *Best Paranormal Romance of 2012- Paranormal Reads Reviews *Quoted in the Sydney Morning Herald as an authority on Independent Publishing.

 Bedroom Games Blurb:
Pamela loves playing games, as do both her partners, just not together. There’s nothing like an exhilarating night of hide-and-seek or catch-me-if-you-can before a long evening of sex with one or the other. The problem? There’s a demon-possessed serial killer on the loose who loves playing sex games as much as Pamela does. When Pamela’s sexual escapades catch the serial killer’s attention, the games begin in earnest as he corners her in her own house. Using her anger—and a handy baseball bat—to her advantage, she takes care of the serial killer, but the demon is even more interested now. Inside Scoop: This scary tale contains brief references to incest, and graphic scenes of violence that may possess readers to keep a bat handy and all the lights on. A Romantica® erotic horror romance from Ellora’s Cave Excerpt: “Settle down. Here’s my truck. You can’t drive your car with that injured foot. I’ll drive you home. It’s my fault you’re hurt. I’m not going to leave you stranded out here. This could be a dangerous place for someone like you.” It was unsettling how he emphasized the “like you”, but then he smiled and it didn’t seem quite so bad as it had a moment earlier. Realizing he was probably right about her not being able to drive home, she allowed him to help her into the passenger side of his old Dodge pickup truck. After all, if he were going to kill her he could have done that when he had her down and out in the woods. That thought was somewhat comforting so she buckled her seatbelt and waited for him to get into the driver’s side of the truck. He stopped about halfway around the front of the truck and dug around in his pocket. He waited to jump into the truck until after he located what he was searching for. She expected him to have his keys in his hand but instead he had a long, sharp pocketknife. He quickly held the menacing knife up against her throat. “This is how this little game is going to play out.” With his free hand, he reached behind him and pulled out a pair of handcuffs from between the seat cushions. He grinned when he tossed them into her lap. “Put ’em on. You do what I tell you and we’ll both wake up happy tomorrow.” He leaned over and licked the side of her face. “Don’t piss me off. You wouldn’t like me pissed off.” When he was certain the handcuffs were securely on her, he started the truck. “I’m going to show you my house.” He grinned. “You’re going to like it there.”

A new creative venture

So, like many writers, I am always checking out any avenue possible, wondering what's around the next turn, and how am I going to make myself stand out?

I do what many other writers do. I have a blog. I have a webpage. I have a Facebook page. I do Twitter. Does it make a rat's ass difference in sales? Sometimes, you really have to wonder.

Recently I placed two books with a small, non-traditional publishing company GMTA. I have great hopes with the marketing programs they have in place, I will see sales of my best seller the Mirror grow in great leaps and bounds. They, however, will be not be in the paperback business after the first of the year, so that will be left up to me on my end. A lot of publishing companies are going this route since everyone seems to think the paperback and the hardback book are about to become things of the past....HMM...I don't think so.

There are too many of us, me included, who just aren't wild about electronic books. You cannot put it on your bookshelf, or have it laying on your desk at work. It is not your nighttime companion taking up the last corner of space on your nightstand. I like really turning a page, but sometimes you have to concede. Sometimes you just have to go with the flow. So, hopefully, if and when this new Dark Romance I am writing comes to an end, it will find a home in a publishing house that does ebooks and promotions with paperbacks to follow once you hit a certain amount in sales. Is the new trend? It just might be, but for now, I am happy with a paperback!

Release Event for Twisted Truth!

Book Title:  The Twisted Truth
Author:  Erin Armstrong
Release Date:  May 30, 2013
Genre:  Urban Fiction
Publisher:  GMTA Publishing, LLC
Presented by:  As You Wish Tours

SYNOPSIS

Michelle Marshall is a strong independent woman with a lot of baggage. Raped right before the start of her senior year of college, Michelle grows to be a caring, single mother to her daughter. Things begin to look pretty grim when the Charity House, the women's shelter she founded, is on the brink of having to close its doors. That is, until Tyler Austin, a mysterious and handsome stranger comes into the picture. Helping Michelle resuscitate the Charity House, Ty also helps her learn to trust, love and feel what she hasn't in years. Not everything is quite as perfect as Michelle would like though, as occasional hints lead her to believe something is not quite right. Her suspicions are confirmed when even more frightening developments occur and start to become...deadly.

EXCERPT ONE

Michelle spent the car ride crying. She couldn’t even bring herself to call Tiffani back and make sure she had taken all of the proper precautions. Ty called the police and made sure there were
units dispatched to the shelter. He also phoned Mya to let her know what was going on. He didn’t want Shiloh to worry, because he knew it was going to be a long night and Michelle wouldn’t be
home anytime soon.

They hadn’t even turned onto the street when the smell of burning wood filled the car. She could see the smoke rising above the rooftops, and all at once her denial quickly came to an end. As
they made their way through the many police officers and the four fire trucks, reality set in.

As they stepped up to where the house used to be, Tiffani ran over to them, while the other mothers and children stood staring at their former home in terror.

Tiffani threw her arms around Michelle. Her body trembled as she sobbed uncontrollably.

“Tiffani, where is Chanel?”

Tiffani fell to the ground. “She’s dead. She’s dead! Oh God, Michelle, she’s gone! She’s gone!”

Michelle turned to Ty, who had his eyes fixed on the shelter.

“Ty, please help me….” The voice that spoke not her own. She had not heard that voice come out of her before; it was weak and throaty.

Ty grabbed her just before she passed out.

~

When Michelle came to, she was in the back of an ambulance. Ty was sitting next to her along with an EMT. Ty leaned in and kissed Michelle on her forehead.

“Hey, baby. Are you okay?”

Michelle closed her eyes and nodded slowly. Was she okay? She wasn’t sure. Everything had happened so quickly that she hadn’t had time to process it all. Maybe there was nothing to process because whether she accepted it or not, her shelter was gone and so was her best friend.

“Is Chanel really gone?” she asked Ty.

“I don’t want you to think about that right now, baby. Just take
it easy, okay?”

Michelle lifted her head, fresh tears filling her eyes. “Answer me! Where is my friend? Where is Chanel?”

Ty looked over at the EMT worker who gave him an encouraging nod. “It’s true, Michelle. They couldn’t save her. I’m sorry.”

Lowering her head back down on the gurney, she cried. It was all too much. She didn’t know what to do. The thought of having to call Chanel’s parents and deliver the bad news overwhelmed her. There was so much that needed to be done and she had no idea where to begin.

BRIEF SYNOPSIS

In old St. Augustine, Florida, fifteen-year-old Jeff Golden’s recurring dream of being stabbed in the chest and bleeding all over his bed is driving him crazy. It’s causing him to lose sleep and giving him severe headaches. When his psychically gifted friend Carla and an ornery Native American shaman named Lobo try to help, Jeff is inundated with terrifying paranormal experiences.

Reaching out of Florida’s distant past, something increasingly entangles Jeff in tentacles of danger that threaten his sanity and eventually his life. But the harder he tries to understand, the deeper he gets. When comprehension finally dawns though, time has almost run out. Lobo does his best to prepare Jeff for what he must face in order to survive but it may be too little and too late.

It’s at this point that both Jeff and Carla find themselves swept headlong into an alternative reality from which they may never return. If they don’t quickly and fully adapt to this situation, all hope is lost. From Lobo they know how it might be possible to change what is happening but the question is, can they? Repeatedly, Lobo has told both teens, “You create your own reality whether in this world or in another.” If acted upon properly, that advice just might save their lives and end suffering on an even wider scale.

BLURB

A new resident of America's oldest and most haunted city, St. Augustine, Florida, fifteen-year-old Jeff Golden suddenly finds himself up to his eyeballs in frightening paranormal experiences. At the end of his rope in trying to figure out what is happening to him, Jeff decides to rely on his friend Carla Rodriguez, and Lobo, an old Native American shaman, for help.

Despite this guidance, things get even worse. Jeff's spine tingling encounters increase in number and intensity at an alarming rate, scaring him even more. Eventually, he makes the startling discovery that unresolved circumstances involving a bloody event directly out of Florida's distant past threatens his sanity and possibly his life.

Finally, overwhelmed by forces he cannot understand or control, Jeff's world shifts from frightening to downright terrifying. In desperation, and on Lobo's advice, he leaps headlong into the unknown in order to save himself. What Jeff discovers though is that he has entered a level of reality he is completely unprepared to handle while unwittingly dragging Carla with him.

Like all the books in THE ST. AUGUSTINE TRILOGY, the premise for Sliding Beneath the Surface is simply this: You create your own reality.

EXCERPT ONE
With a final laugh, Carla coughed, caught her breath, and said, “That alarm system is Lobo‘s way of scaring off unwanted visitors without actually having to use real dogs. So, are you finally ready to meet him?”

“Anything to get away from you letting me get attacked by wild dogs,” I said, trying to sound serious, even though I realized I probably had looked pretty silly.

“Oh poor baby,” Carla said with one of her sly, sexy smiles.

God she looks so good when she smiles. I mean she looks good all the time, but her smiles are something else, like a flash of warm sunshine. Ruining the moment, the screech of a power saw sliced the air for a short time and stopped. It sounded like it came from the small, unpainted building. I remembered hearing that saw noise from Carla‘s back yard.

“He‘s in his workshop,” she said. “Not good. He doesn‘t like being interrupted when he‘s concentrating on his carvings. He might even be a little grumpier than usual, so try not to be offended.”

“Great, can‘t wait.” I groaned, massaging my left temple with the tips of my fingers when Carla turned away. “Sounds like so much freakin‘ fun.” The idea of facing some bad tempered old man was not really how I wanted to end my day, you know? Bad dream or no bad dream. By then though, we were approaching Mr. Lobo‘s beat-up truck. To the left of the truck, light shown between the blinds of the two large windows in the workshop, but I couldn‘t really see anything inside.

“Being sarcastic isn‘t going to make things any better,” Carla said. “We‘re not here to have fun, we‘re here to get you some help, OK?” She sounded like a mother taking her child to see the doctor for the first time.

“Yes, momma,” I kidded, using a squeaky child‘s voice, “I promise I‘ll be good.”

Carla rolled her eyes, shook her head and punched me in the arm. “You are absolutely hopeless sometimes.” When I say punch, I mean punch! For a small person, she packs a wallop.
